Invisible Guardians of National Borders
Two IGM technicians take a survey as part of a national border maintenance mission
One of the IGM's tasks, albeit little known, is a fundamental mission for our Nation: the "maintenance" of national borders. This task dates back to a ministerial ruling of 1941 and, even today, involves the IGM acting as the silent guardian of the invisible lines that separate Italy from its neighboring countries.
The Institute's military and civilian personnel carry out this activity according to the bilateral agreements in force with "neighboring" countries.
Maintaining borders is not just a technical matter, but a commitment through sureveys, measurements and direct interventions carried out by a team of experts.
This work is crucial not only for updating the correct demarcation of national borders, but also for defining administrative responsibilities and managing emergencies such as natural disasters or unforeseen events.
Maintenance operations are carried out according to the bilateral agreements in force with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.
